When you reset your computer, all the settings will be reset to the default factory version, including registries, group policies, and any customizations you've made so far. The default setting will likely solve your icon problem if no other fix worked, but you should be aware of the risks involved. It is important to remember that if you choose the remove everything option, all data and files will be deleted, and your drives will be wiped.

Don't make your life more difficult by wiping your data. Hopefully, the fixes in the list will bring back all the icons that disappeared and normalize the blank ones. If nothing seems to work, you may have no choice but to manually change the icons one by one and create shortcut icons for those that have disappeared. If that doesn't work either, reinstall your OS. Would you like to give your operating system a unique look?

What to Know The quick launch toolbar has been gone since Windows 7, but you can bring it back. Consider using the pin feature if you want easy access to a handful of commonly used apps. If you do this successfully, it will push the quick launch menu to the left side of the taskbar. Was this page helpful? Thanks for letting us know! Email Address Sign up There was an error.

Please try again. Unfortunately, in return for the added features, the system has increased complexity - which makes it more difficult to troubleshoot. Thanks for your post. I hear you. I had a number of applications on that computer WordPerfect 4. When all was loaded, with the DOS 3. The price of the software nearly equaled the cost of the computer. On first boot this AM, the icons were, gone, but I put them back by unpinning one, which restored all but that icon, and then pinned that icon back.

On the next boot, all of the icons were there. Go figure No major issue. Just takes less than a minute to restore them, but I will be happy when MS fixes this "enhanced feature. I am not complaining. Lots of folks have a lot more, and very serious, problems with WinX. I am really glad that I followed the excellent advice here and went with the Clean Install via the Media Creation Tool. At least I know the minor glitches that I am experiencing are not the result of "garbage" imported from my previous Windows 7 install, which was four years old.

Posted 13 January - PM. I just came across this thread on the Bitdefender Forums, which I visit daily. The OP is correct. The behaviour started when I activated the Bitdefender Ransomware Protection. Hopefully Bitdefender will fix this glitch. Just wanted to report back what was the cause of the problem, in the hope that it will help others. Posted 14 January - AM. Posted 29 January - AM.

Just a further update. On the Bitdefender Forum link I cited in my previous update, more information has since been provided. This "disappearing" task bar icon issue only happens when the "Desktop" folder is being protected by the Bitdefender Anti-Ransomware module. If you remove the "Desktop" folder from the list of protected folders, the problem is resolved. Bottom line: it not not necessary to disable the Bitdefender Anti-Ransomware module.

You also get to install any downloaded updates if you have trouble installing them normally or roll back to a previous driver version if the issue occurred after the most recent driver update. Expand Display Adapters and double-click your video adapter to access its Properties pane. Switch to the Driver tab to view the driver details and options to update or roll back the display driver.

Buggy or outdated system files is another reason that can prevent the desktop, taskbar or the Start menu from functioning correctly. Installing the latest updates can help fix things like blank icons in Windows If you have trouble updating Windows 10, learn how to fix Windows Update. If the issue is limited to a specific icon or shortcut related to an application, try updating it.

Open the More menu within the Microsoft Store select icon with three dots and select Downloads and updates to install the latest updates for Microsoft Store apps. For apps you downloaded outside of the Microsoft Store, look for any update options inside the app. For further assistance feel free to post your queries in Microsoft forums. We will be glad to assist you. Was this reply helpful?

Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thank you for updating us with the status of the issue and glad to know that your issue is resolved. For further assistance related to Windows feel free to post your queries in Microsoft forums. I tried running these commands but instead of running it said error87 system does not recognise these commands.

I made sure I'd typed them correctly and I had? Relates to the issue, you can try copy and paste the commands in Command prompt and check if it works for you. This is too simple!! All of my shortcuts in the Windows 10 desktop have become white or blank.

I have created a test user account as Sangetta Sarkar suggested, and the icons seem to be present for that account, but not for my user account on the same computer.

Some icons of desktop shortcuts gone blank in Windows 10 PC . - Microsoft Community. How to Add the Quick Launch Toolbar in Windows 10

This article explains how to add a Quick Launch toolbar to the taskbar in Windows Microsoft added the quick launch toolbar in Windows XP to provide an easy way to access common apps from your taskbar, but it disappeared with the introduction of Windows 7.

Right-click your taskbar to bring up the menu. Make sure to click a blank area. Click Select Folder. You now have a quick launch toolbar on your taskbar. If you prefer it on the left, continue following these directions. Right-click the taskbar, and make sure the taskbar is unlocked. The quick launch bar is now on the left. If you want to hide the quick launch text, right-click the quick launch toolbar and click the checkmark next to Show title.

Then click the checkmarks next to the Show Cortana text and Show task view button. You now have a quick launch toolbar directly next to the Start menu, just like Windows XP, either with or without the quick launch title text, depending on your own preference. While the Quick Launch toolbar was quite helpful, and many people liked it, the ability to pin apps to the taskbar took its place in the default Windows design. You can right-click any app on your taskbar and choose to pin it to either the start menu or taskbar for easy access.

The quick launch menu is better if you have more than a handful of apps you want easy access to, but pinning is convenient for a handful of your most commonly used apps.
